Full summary
The episode starts out in Viridian Forest where Ash, Misty and Pikachu are walking along a path, when they come across a Weedle. Ash wants to catch it, so he tells Pikachu to battle it, but Pikachu doesnt want to because its taking a nap, so Ash chooses Pidgeotto instead. Ash then looks up to hears a shriek from Misty and notices that the Weedle is standing right beside her. Misty is so scared that she runs away and the battle begins.

While Misty is away, she meets a samurai with a sword who demands to know if she is a Pokemon trainer from Pallet. Misty answers "no" and the samurai walks away. After he is gone, Misty releases that the samurai is looking for Ash and is worried, so she starts running back towards him.

Ash meawhile has easily beaten the Weedle and is about to catch it when the samurai comes up to him and asks if hes a trainer from Pallet. Ash quickly snaps out "yes" because he is occupied with the Weedle and continues. Misty finally arrives and sees Samurai behind Ash with his sword pointed at him and yells watch out. Ash quickly turns around and sees Samurai swing his sword almost hitting him before abruptly stopping. The samurai says that he wants to challenges Ash to a Pokemon battle, Ash remembers the Weedle and turns around to see it walking away. Ash throws a Pokeball at it, but misses. Ash is angry and blames it on Samurai. Samurai doesnt think he is responsible and insults him. Ash is angry and accepts the samurais challenge.

Ash starts out the battle by choosing Pidgeotto, but when it comes out of the Pokeball its laying on the ground because its tired from the battle a few minutes ago with Weedle. The samurai says that Ashs mistake is one only a novice would make. After the insult, Samurai calls out Pinsir and beats Pidgeotto within seconds with a simple Tackle. Ash then calls back a tired Pidgeotto and calls out his new Metapod. Samurai starts out by telling Pinsir to break Metapod in half, but Ash desperately tells Metapod to harden just as Pinsir picks it up with its claws and starts to close them on it. Metapod is lucky and cracks Pinsirs claws, instead making the battle one-on-one. Samurai then surprisingly calls out his own Metapod and the battle of the hardening Metapods starts, but before the battle can be decided, the samurai sees a swarm of Beedrills flying and wisely grabs his Metapod, thus ending the battle.

Ash realizes why the samurai ran away and is about to grab his Metapod and do the same, but a Beedrill snatches it up and flies away before he can. Ash wants to help Metapod, but cant because the Beedrill swarm starts attacking him and so hes forced to run away too. Ash, Samurai and Misty luckily evade the Beedrills by hiding behind a tree, but notice that instead they have run into a group of Kakuna and Ashs Metapod. Ash is about to snatch Metapod up (again), but the Kakuna awake and evolve into more Beedrill. Ash and friends head over to the samurais cabin and just make it before the Beedrill can sting them. When they are safe in the cabin, Samurai scolds Ash for letting the Weedle away and worn the others. That night while the others sleep, Ash becomes determined to get back Metapod the next day.

The next day, Ash sneaks over to the Kakuna hive to get Metapod, but suddenly is greeted by Team Rocket. They start saying their motto, but Ash warns them to keep it down. Team Rocket doesnt listen and wake up the Beedrill. Ash quickly grabs Metapod and starts to run, but Team Rocket isnt worried because they have a cardboard box to protect them from the Beedrill. When they turn around they see that some Weedle have eaten it and they start running too. However, after tripping on a rock, Ash realizes that he can't make excuses for leaving Metapod and vows to never leave a Pokemon or friends behind again. Samurai, Misty, and Pikachu come running up to warn Ash about a Beedrill sneaking up behind him, but Metapod throws his body at the Beedrill breaking the Beedrill's stinger. Ash is worried that Metapod is hurt, but then suddenly it evolves into Butterfree. The swarm starts to come back, but Butterfree wants to fight so Ash orders a sleep powder attack that puts them all to sleep. Samurai is impressed with Ash's control over a Butterfree that has just evolved and has a newfound respect for him. They part with a new friendship and a vow to meet and have a most spectacular battle of their own one-day.
