Full summary
The episode starts out by showing Team Rocket digging a hole in the ground so that they can trap Pikachu. They then cover it up with dirt and leaves, but cant seem to remember where they dug it and fall into their own trap.
Meanwhile, Ash finally finds his way out of Viridian Forest and finds Pewter City. Ash and his friends meet a man named Flint who takes them to the Pokecentre. When Ash is in the Pokecentre he sees a poster advertising the Pokemon Leagues. The Poster says that you have to get at least 8 badges by beating 8 gym leaders to get in. Ash decides that he wants to enter them, but Flint warns Ash that the first gym leader Brock is very tough. Ash isnt scared and still wants to try and win his first badge the Boulder Badge so he starts on his way.
When Ash finally arrives at the Pewter City Gym, he enters and sees Brocks. He tells Brock that he wants to challenge him and Brock accepts, but the rules are that each trainer must use 2 Pokemon each and the first one to make the opposing trainers Pokemon faint first wins. Ash understands and the battle begins. Ash starts out by choosing Pikachu and Brock follows by choosing an Onix, which is a giant snake made up of rock. Brock starts out by telling Onix to use tackle, but Pikachu evades the attack and unluckily falls right into Brocks trap. Brock quickly then tells Onix to use Bind on Pikachu and it starts squeezing the life out of Pikachu. Pikachu tries to retaliate with a Thundershock, but it has no effect. Ash tries to call back Pikachu, but cant because Onix is blocking it. Ash waits a few seconds, but cant stand to see Pikachu getting hurt anymore, so he surrenders losing his first attempt to get a badge.
After the match when Ash is on his way to the Pokecentre he meets Flint again and they go back to Flints cabin. Ash asks why Brock never entered a regional championship and Flint shows Ash why. Ash finds out that Brock cant because he has to tend to all of his ten little sisters and brothers. Ash asks Flint where Brocks mom or dad and Flint responds that Brocks good-for-nothing father left the family to be a Pokemon trainer and never returned. Ash for some reason becomes determined to beat beat Brock, but he says that he needs to find some way to power up Pikachu first. Flint kindly interjects and says that he might have a way and he takes Ash to a hydroelectric plant. Flint tells Ash that he can supercharge Pikachu by hooking Pikachu up to it and manually turning the wheel. Ash thinks that it is a good idea and successfully supercharges Pikachu.
This time when Ash and Pikachu arrive in the gym, they are pumped. Ash challenges Brock and he accepts, so the battle begins with same rules as before. Ash of course chooses his supercharged Pikachu and Brock chooses a Geodude, but Pikachu defeats it within seconds, with its Thunderbolt, so Brock chooses his Onix. Pikachu starts out by using its Thunderbolt and it looks like its going to win, but Onix uses bind and takes control of the match. Brock then surprisingly tells Onix to stop. Brock says that theres no point of going on with the match because he doesnt want to hurt Pikachu, suddenly the sprinklers in the gym go off, because of Pikachus Thunderbolt. Onix gets covered with water and just when Ash is about to tell Pikachu to finish it off, Brocks little brothers and sisters hold Ash back so he cant. Brock tells his sisters and brothers to stop, but before they can Ash says he didnt really win and that the sprinklers were an accident and he leaves.
Later that day when Ash is walking along a path, Brock comes running up behind him. Brock tells Ash that he wants him to take the badge because he earned it. Ash takes the badge making it his first badge, but just before they are both about to depart Flint walks up and tells Brock to go follow his dreams. Flint then reveals that hes Brocks good-for-nothing father and says that he will be a real father and take care of the family. Brock is happy and he and Ash start their journey, but on the way out of Pewter City, Misty comes running after Ash and tells him not to forget her bike.
